Jeep has confirmed it is building an SUV to compete with the BMW X1 and Nissan Qashqai. The car is set to be launched in the United States at the end of 2016, and is likely to be called the Compass, continuing a model line begun by the American brand in 2006.
It will sit in the company’s range between the smaller Renegade and bigger Cherokee, measuring 4.2m to 4.5m in length.
The introduction of the SUV is part of a five-year plan set out by Jeep’s parent company, Fiat, which stated that the existing Compass and Patriot SUV models would be replaced by a single model. Other Jeeps planned include a new version of the utilitarian Wrangler, which will go on sale in 2017, followed a year later by a large, luxury vehicle — called the Grand Wagoneer — designed to take on the Range Rover.
