All has been revealed! Or at least part of what might be the next pure-electric Jaguar this time next year... has been revealed.
After its hugely controversial "Copy Nothing" teaser last month, Jaguar has unveiled an actual car: the Type 00 ("Type Zero Zero"), which it says embodies its "creative philosophy of Exuberant Modernism". The wraps came off the vehicle at Miami Art Week, in South Florida.
After all the "there's no car!" outrage around November's teaser, the key thing to understand about Type 00 is that it isn't the car. It's a "design vision" according to Jaguar, which no doubt establishes a few key styling cues for its next production model, but isn't the finished product by a long shot.
Jaguar's next production model will be a 4-door GT with pure-electric power, to be revealed at the end of 2025. It will use dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA) and target a range of up to 770km WLTP, with the capability to add over 300km of charge in as little as 15 minutes.
The Type 00 tag for the concept references both the zero-emissions powertrain and its status as a car that resets Jaguar's design language, says the company.
Type 00 is being presented in two colours, Miami Pink and London Blue – the former reflecting the Art Deco surroundings of its reveal, the latter its British heritage.
It goes against typical EV design (including Jaguar's own groundbreaking I-Pace) by having a long bonnet and fastback tail, like a traditional coupe. It rides on massive 23-inch wheels.
The side profile has the Jaguar leaper laser-etched into a hand-finished brass ingot on each side of the car. These deploy to reveal rear-facing cameras that – like the charging ports and front air intakes – remain hidden until needed.
The rear elevation is dominated by horizontal "strikethrough" graphics, which hide full-width taillights. There are butterfly doors and a glassless "pantograph"-style tailgate (like the power collector on an electric train).
The cabin features three hand-finished brass lines which run the length of the interior, with a central 3.2m-long brass spine that splits a pair of floating instrument panels. As with the exterior, "deployable" technology is a theme of the cabin, with hidden screens and controls that present when required.
"Type 00 is a pure expression of Jaguar’s new creative philosophy," says chief creative officer Professor Gerry McGovern, OBE. "It has an unmistakable presence. This is the result of brave, unconstrained creative thinking, and unwavering determination.
"It is our first physical manifestation and the foundation stone for a new family of Jaguars that will look unlike anything you’ve ever seen. A vision which strives for the highest level of artistic endeavour.
