A skilfully restored Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, part of the esteemed Double G Collection, is poised to be the centrepiece of an upcoming Mecum auction

With an expected sale price between US$1.8 million and $2 million (NZ$3.2 million and $3.5 million), this rare classic will likely attract serious collectors worldwide.

A rare masterpiece

One of just 70 examples produced in 1957 - and a mere 1400 units ever made - this 300SL Gullwing epitomises mid-century automotive excellence.

Finished in an elegant Silver Grey, the car underwent a comprehensive restoration in 1999. It retains its original belly pans and has clocked only 33,485km, reinforcing its allure as a well-preserved collector’s item.

The cabin is a vivid contrast to the subtle exterior, with bright red leather upholstery adorning the seats, dashboard and side sills. Even the matching Alfred Baisch suitcases behind the front seats maintain this luxurious theme.

Adding a retro touch are details like a woodgrain Nardi steering wheel, lap belts and a large gear shifter with a cream-coloured knob.

Performance that still impresses

Under the bonnet lies a 3.0-litre naturally aspirated inline-six engine, producing a sneaky 160kW.

Paired with a four-speed manual transmission, the rear-wheel-drive setup enables the Gullwing to reach a top speed of 260km/h - a remarkable figure for its time.

Further enhancing its vintage charm are chrome bumpers, original wing mirrors and 15-inch wheels fitted with Michelin XWX tyres.

Set to sell without reserve, this 300SL represents an opportunity for enthusiasts to own a piece of motoring history, especially as many consider it one of the first supercars ever built.

For those with the means, it promises to be an unmatched addition to any collection.
