Hyundai’s RN24 trades traditional body panels for rally-ready engineering.

Hyundai’s RN24 trades traditional body panels for rally-ready engineering.

Hyundai's latest concept car, the RN24, offers a fresh look into the future of high-performance electric vehicles (EVs) in a design that’s both striking and functional.

Unveiled as a "rolling lab," (much like the N Vision 74) this prototype integrates technologies that could shape the next generation of the N division's electric offerings.

The RN24 takes its cues from the World Rally Championship (WRC), delivering the same 478kW drivetrain found in the Ioniq 5 N but packed into a significantly more compact chassis.

Built on a shortened platform, this EV rally-inspired concept trims the Ioniq 5 N’s wheelbase by 340mm, creating a leaner, more agile vehicle optimised for performance testing.

Remarkably, despite the smaller frame, the RN24 still houses the same 84 kWh battery pack, providing the energy needed to unleash its impressive power.

Hyundai's engineers designed the RN24 not only for raw speed but also for control. With features adapted from Hyundai's WRC vehicles, drivers can adjust multiple parameters, including power, acceleration, regenerative braking and power distribution, directly from the steering wheel.

This level of fine-tuning puts the RN24 in a league of its own, setting it apart from conventional electric prototypes.

Beyond power adjustments, the RN24 boasts a dedicated 'Rally Mode' inspired by the i20 N Rally1, which optimises torque distribution, enhancing stability and control over rough terrain.

An advanced e-Handbrake, another feature rooted in rallying, enables drivers to perform controlled slides, adding another layer of manoeuvrability. This mode aims to simulate real rally conditions, bringing Hyundai closer to a production-ready electric rally car.

One of the most distinctive elements of the RN24 is its exoskeleton-style design, which ditches traditional body panels for an exposed roll cage.

This skeletal frame reduces weight and enhances structural integrity, while also providing an aggressive aesthetic reminiscent of motorsport vehicles. Adding to the visual impact is the imposing rear wing, adapted from Hyundai’s TCR race cars, which offers extra downforce essential for high-speed handling.

The RN24's total weight stands at approximately 1880 kg - around 350kg less than the Ioniq 5 N - further refining its performance profile.

To keep the EV engaging, Hyundai N equipped the RN24 with an evolved version of the N Active Sound+ system. With additional side speakers and rear fenders that double as sound chambers, this setup ensures that the RN24 delivers an enhanced acoustic experience. Although artificial, these sounds aim to evoke the thrill of traditional motorsport, an aspect often missing from quieter electric vehicles.

Hyundai N Brand’s Vice President, Joon Park, explains, “RN24 exemplifies Hyundai N’s commitment to advancing electric motorsport technology by prioritising the driving experience rather than spec numbers. This Rolling Lab proves that there remains untapped potential for high-performance EVs and with new technologies ahead, there is much to look forward to.”

As an experimental platform, the RN24 allows Hyundai to trial advanced technologies in an unorthodox package that pushes both design and functionality. This approach signifies Hyundai’s ambition to bring excitement to the electric vehicle space, where performance is typically sacrificed for efficiency.

While there is no confirmation of a production model inspired by the RN24, its development signals Hyundai’s dedication to electric motorsport and suggests a promising future for the N division’s electrified performance lineup.
