Back in the early 1980s Toyota New Zealand teamed up with the original Good Keen Man himself, Barry Crump, to create what is arguably the most beloved advertising campaign in New Zealand history.
The original television advert for the 1982 Toyota Hilux is one of legend, pairing the iconic Kiwi author with a stereotypical "city boy" in the form of Lloyd Scott who turns up to show off his shiny new Hilux to the legendary bushman.
Crumpy then takes Scott on a terrifying ride through the bush uttering laconic, understated asides like "hang on up here mate, she gets a bit bumpy" before Scott smacks his head on the roof (no seat belts here!) as the Hilux plummets through the bush.
The advert ends with Crump impressed with Scotty's new Hilux, revealing that there was only one way he had got that far into the bush previously before pulling alongside a classic Land Cruiser and saying "and that's it there."
The advert was an instant success and would spawn a series of commercials over the next 12 years.
Two interesting facts: according to Bob Field, Toyota NZ's CEO at the time of the commercials, it was all actually Crump's idea, saying "I'd like to say it was the result a lot of detailed research and analysis, but basically he rang us out of the blue."
The second? That there actually used to be a Toyota dealership in the USA that was called Scott Crump Toyota. And they made quite different ads...
