The new Honda Civic Type R is one of this year's standout models.
Driven was among the first to test the new Type R on road and track, where we found it to be the most capable Civic Type R ever with its turbocharged engine and sporty chassis rightly earning the nameplate a spot in the AA's top 10 Car of the Year finalists.
Now, Honda has announced that it will offer a crate version of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder VTEC Turbo engine found under the hood of the 2017 Civic Type R.
Honda say the engine, designated K20C1, will produce the same 228kW and 400Nm as the road car. But unfortunately, you won't be able to drop the new crate engine into any car you desire - especially if it's a road car.
The K20C1 crate motor is being offered through HPD Honda Racing Line, American Honda's factory support programme. But before you're allowed to purchase the engine, you have to become a member of HPD and verify that it'll be used to power a competition car in a sanctioned race series.
Honda say the crate engine is for "US grassroots and professional racers for verified, closed-course racing applications," but they do not rule out the chance to buy one for use outside of America.
Once you're all signed up and the engine application verified, HPD will sell you the Honda Civic Type R K20C1 crate motor for US$6519.87 (NZ$9480) excluding shipping.
While the turbocharged unit might not scream in the same way older naturally-aspirated Type R engines once did, the new 2017 engine has undoubtedly made the Civic Type R one of the quickest front-wheel drive cars on the planet - something Honda demonstrated around the Nurburgring earlier this year.
Membership will also give 'the most direct access' to Honda's performance parts-division which supplies everything from Karting spares to fully-fledged Rallycross or IndyCar engines.
So if you're contemplating a Honda Time Attack build, HPD might have everything you could ever ask for.
