Those familiar with Porsche will be aware of the hard-core, road-going GT2 and GT3 models. But long before these cars became a staple for Instagram influencers and YouTubers alike, they were ground-breaking in the sports car segment.
Recently listed on international auction site RM Sotheby's, this 1996 Porsche 911 993 GT2 has been tipped to fetch well over $2 million when the auction ends on March 28th, and it isn't hard to see why.
As it was the first 911 to wear the GT2 badge, the 993 Turbo was taken to a whole new level thanks to some serious modifications. Only 194 examples of this car were ever produced, and it was the last air-cooled model, making it one of the most sought-after Porsches.
At the rear of the car sits a twin-turbo 3.6-litre flat-six engine that produces a hefty 320kW and 619Nm of torque. A six-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels, allowing the car to hit 100km/h in under four seconds before topping out at 305km/h.
Supporting performance upgrades made to the GT2 include carbon-ceramic brakes, 18-inch alloy wheels with magnesium centres, a massive fixed rear wing, and large fender extensions that give it the authentic 'RWB' look without ruining the factory lines.
This example lived most of its life in Japan, before being exported to America earlier this year. It's in incredible condition for its age, and it optioned with air-conditioning, electric windows, and a gorgeous grey and black interior.
Only 30,113KMs are showing on its odometer, which obviously adds to its value. A few years ago, a similar spec GT2 sold for $4 million at the same auction. Like this car, it was tipped to sell for $2 million, but doubled that.
As the air-cooled Porsche market has shown no signs of slowing over the past few years, what this "holy grail" will actually sell for it anyone's guess. I'm just hoping that all these air-cooled Porsche sales will push up the value of my air-cooled Beetle.
