The movie world's relationship with the car world tends to manifest itself in two leading ways. The first is that most famous of the '70s and '80s, when the general populous worshiped cars and movie machines like the General Lee would regularly become household names in their own right. The second is perhaps more prolific today; product placement. The concept that defines that every second car in the new-wave Fast & Furious films is some kind of Dodge or Fiat.
There's a third way though, defined by Kiwi director Taika Waititi's newest and biggest movie project — Thor: Ragnarok.
I won't sit here and talk about the film (potentially due to a fear of showing ignorance, having never seen any of the past Thor movies. Not at all), other than to say that in the trailers and tidbits that have been released thus far it looks pretty dang watchable. And now, as confirmed in a brief press junket interview with Aussie radioheads Triple J, Waititi confirmed one of the film's grand Easter eggs.
The spaceships are named after Holdens. Holdens.
There are ships named after older nameplates, including the Torana, the Kingswood, and the Statesman — as well as the still-existing (ish) Commodore.
In the interview, which I implore you to watch in full above, Waititi says that the inclusion was part of a series of small additions that made him feel more comfortable and at home during production of one of 2017's biggest releases. These included hiring a lot of Australian and Maori cast members and staffers, on a set that was based largely over the ditch.
The film hits Kiwi cinemas next Thursday (October 26). If you hear someone shouting; "Did you see that! The spaceship is named after a Holden!" in your screening, it's probably me.
