While some police departments in Australia have opted to switch from Aussie-built Holdens and Fords to replace their existing fleet, South Australian (SA) police will stick with the German-built, locally-tuned ZB Holden Commodores.

After trailing different options and extensive comparison runs, SA Police have decided to stick with the GM brand who has supplied vehicles to the department since 1948. Specifically, SA Police have elected the RS V6 all-wheel drive model to join the police fleet.

Holden Australia expects to supply more than 100 of the new ZB Commodores as general duty and highway patrol cars to SA Police before the end of the year.

“SA Police have run an exhaustive comparison of vehicles from every manufacturer and we’re proud our latest Commodore has once again proven its credentials when it comes to vehicle safety, specifications, durability, dynamics, performance and importantly manufacturer and servicing support,” said Holden Australia's Director of Sales, Peter Keley.

“Holden’s Australian engineers have worked collaboratively with SA Police to ensure this vehicle meets the leading safety and performance requirements needed for modern policing and importantly to ensure it is the safest vehicle possible to protect their frontline officers.”

“This is the most technologically-advanced Holden ever. The 3.6-litre V6 is a world-class engine and, when paired to our new smart adaptive All Wheel Drive system, there’s a level of traction never seen or felt in a Commodore before. Our Holden engineers know what Australian drivers – and police officers – expect from driving a Commodore and this vehicle delivers."

Earlier this month, Queensland Police selected the twin-turbo Kia Stinger to replace its existing fleet. And in late 2017, Police Highway Patrol in Victoria decided replace their Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore V8 pursuit cars with a turbo diesel BMW 5 Series sedans.

In New Zealand, Police will stick with ZB Commodore sedans and Sportwagons

The new ZB Commodores will be gradually deployed as part of a South Australian fleet upgrade over the next two years.
