Video perfectly underlines the skill required in drifting
‘Demands’ is probably too eager a term, really. Drifting as a culture likes to embrace the odd slice of dislike from the 'purist' pack. I would too.
A fair few years ago I used to be one, living a life fueled solely by racing of the 'grip' variety. But all it took was one drift event in the flesh to underline for me the amount skill and precision these drivers are capable of. A few laps in a drift car a year ago only further enriched my views.
I tried as hard as I could to embody the amount of drama and action that takes place in the driver's seat of a drift car through the power of words, but nothing can top good video footage. And this clip recently released by the slightly crazed, but highly qualified crew at Animal Style fits the bill almost perfectly.
People go nuts watching race drivers heel and toe with ease, but the footwork in a drift car is something else entirely. At full speed, it almost looks like the driver's completely out of control. But re-watch the video, and you can tell that each application of pedal serves a purpose. Add in that the pilot is able to stay within inches of the lead car, and you have one impressive gumbo of skill sets.
