Hampton Downs could play host to new marquee endurance event

Hampton Downs is set to host a new 1001km endurance race in the Australian GT series from next year.

An Australian motorsport website is reporting that track and series owner Tony Quinn is keen to add a 262 lap race at his North Waikato race track to the ever-growing series. The venue will stage the Hampton Downs 101 for the first time at the end of October while his South Island track Highlands Motorsport Park has staged a 101 since 2013.

"We have built up the 101 brand with our endurance races but next year I'm pretty determined to do a 1001km race," Quinn told Speedcafe.com.

"I think depending on how Hampton Downs goes this year, I would think it would be a great venue for that.

"We are definitely looking into it."

The website also says Hampton Downs could host a one-off GT race that would see the best from the Australian GT series and counterparts from GT Asia.

Discussions between the parties are underway with a 2018 date likely.
