GWM has added a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel variant to its New Zealand Tank 300 lineup. The new engine comes only with the top Ultra specification: at $57,990 it fits neatly in between the $52,990 Ultra petrol and $59,990 Ultra hybrid.

Not as much torque as the hybrid, but the turbo-diesel tows more: 3 tonnes.

The engine is familiar from other GWM models, including the just-upgraded Cannon ute and Cannon Alpha. It makes 135kW/480Nm, with peak pulling power available all the way from 1500-2500rpm. It's matched with a 9-speed automatic transmission. The ADR fuel consumption figure is 7.8l/100km.

The turbo-diesel has 27kW less power than the petrol but 100Nm more torque; compared to the hybrid it's down 120kW/168Nm.

But the turbo gains 500kg towing capacity over every other Tank 300: it's rated at 3 tonnes.

Turbo-diesel might just be the most versatile of the Tank 300 lineup.

Otherwise, the turbo diesel shares a very similar specification to the Ultra hybrid, save a few detail differences (it misses out on High Way Assist, Reverse Assist and Auto Parking Assist, for example).
