Sony Pictures have announced a project that will have both petrol heads and gamers pumped with adrenaline, as they are now officially working an a feature length adaptation of motorsport video game Gran Turismo for the big screen.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that screenwriters Jon and Erich Hoeber (RED, RED 2) are working on the adaptation, and that Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion, Tron: Legacy) is set to helm the project. While there’s no known plot at this time, sources are speculating that Kosinski and the Hoeber’s will eschew the typical Fast and Furious street racer film and may instead focus on the concept of a ‘gamer-turned-racer’.
With that in mind the story of successful GT: Academy winner turned Nissan LMP1 driver, Jann Mardenborough (above), could form the inspiration for the film.
Gran Turismo is primarily known as a video game series for the PlayStation gaming console, utilizing licensed reproductions of nearly 1200 real-world cars. This should mean any film should prove to be a cinematic experience of great interest for car lovers.
