GM unveils a compact, arrow-inspired electric SUV concept.

GM unveils a compact, arrow-inspired electric SUV concept.

  • GM has revealed a compact, sporty electric SUV concept aimed primarily at China.
  • The concept features a grille-less front with split LED headlights and a wraparound glasshouse.
  • No technical details were released, but the design study previews Chevrolet’s potential direction for future small EVs.

General Motors has dropped a new design tease from its China Advanced Design studio, and it’s a spicy one.

Dubbed simply a “sporty EV”, the fresh concept is aimed squarely at Chinese buyers (still the world’s most influential EV battleground) and carries more than a whiff of what a future Bolt-sized compact SUV could look like.

Arrow by design

Created in GM’s Shanghai studio by designer Charles Huang, the sketch set shows a compact SUV with a crisp, grille-less face and split LED headlights flanking a smooth front panel.

The Chevrolet badge may even light up, because subtlety is optional when you’re trying to stand out in the busiest EV market on Earth.

Huang says the profile draws inspiration from a “released arrow”. It’s most obvious in the early, stylised drawings, where the body looks taut and ready to spring forward.

Later, more realistic renderings soften the extremities, edging closer to something that wouldn’t look out of place on a production line.

Wraparound drama, showroom vibes

The standout visual move is the wraparound glasshouse, framed by a thick C-pillar that appears to grab the rear of the vehicle. Paired with a deep blue and black two-tone scheme, the effect is bold without tipping into concept-car caricature.

Strip away the oversized wheels and the show-car stance and you can almost imagine this thing parked in a Chevrolet showroom, after someone adds mirrors and door handles back in. Its proportions seem similar to the Chinese-market Chevrolet Tracker RS and the outgoing Bolt, which would place it beneath the Trailblazer, Trax, Equinox EV and Blazer in size terms.

What’s under the skin?

This is strictly a design study, so there are no hard specs. GM has not disclosed the powertrain or battery details yet, though there are hints of a rear-mounted electric motor and a mid-sized pack would be a sensible fit for a vehicle of this footprint.

GM is openly working on multiple affordable EVs across its global portfolio, and while this concept isn’t destined for showrooms as-is, it feels like a preview of where Chevrolet’s compact EV styling is heading—clean surfaces, taut lines, SUV practicality and just enough attitude to attract young urban buyers.

If this is the design language for GM’s next wave of small electric SUVs, it certainly looks ready to let that “arrow” fly.
