Ford is on the brink of a major milestone as its Mustang GTD is poised to set a new standard for American performance cars.
With aspirations of completing a sub-seven-minute lap at the Nurburgring, the Mustang GTD is on track to be the first production American car to achieve such a feat.
The announcement comes in the form of a brief, yet intense teaser video, showcasing Ford's ambitions to shatter speed records.
The Mustang GTD, which boasts 608kW and 900 Nm of torque, is unlike any other American muscle car. Its steep price tag reflects not only its performance but the advanced engineering within, including materials inspired by jet fighters.
According to Ford CEO Jim Farley, the GTD aims to outdo iconic European supercars, with a particular focus on the Porsche GT3 RS’s formidable 6:44.848 lap time at the Nurburgring.
Currently, the fastest American car around the Nurburgring is the SRT Viper ACR, which clocked in at 7:01.30.
Although impressive, the Viper's record left room for improvement, as it was achieved on the first full-speed run of the day, with the attempt halted by a crash.
Ford, however, has larger ambitions for the Mustang GTD. Simply breaking the seven-minute mark isn't enough - Ford aims to dominate.
The comparison to the Porsche GT3 places Ford's ambitions in perspective.
Achieving a time near or below Porsche's would position the Mustang GTD as a legitimate rival to Europe’s best, not just an American contender. Ford's ultimate goal is to prove that the GTD can compete with the likes of Porsche, surpassing not only the SRT Viper ACR’s time but challenging Germany's finest.
The official lap time is expected to be revealed later this year.
All eyes are on Ford as it pushes the boundaries of American engineering on the world stage.
