Ford are on the brink of returning to the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship with an all-new car, according to reports in Australia.
Auto Action have revealed that Ford Australia is ready to support development of a two-door Mustang Supercar race car that could enter the championship as early as next year.
The report suggests that Ford Australia will provide DJR Team Penske and Tickford Racing with technical and financial assistance to develop and build the new Mustang Supercar, though neither team will be an official fully factory backed squad.
Gen2 regulations allow the Mustang to enter the Supercars Championship because rules allow for both two-door coupes and four-door sedans. While the body style would be new, it's expected that the new Mustang will be powered by the same 5.0-litre V8 currently used in the series.
The news follows reports from the same outlet that DJR Team Penske would switch to Holden next year if there was no competitive Ford replacement.
If the Mustang rejoins the Supercars Championship next year, it will be the first time the iconic two-door muscle car has raced in Australasia's premier touring car series since the Group A era in 1985.
Ford Australia, who has not provided factory support to any Supercars team for three years, is expected to make an official announcement about the new car and project tomorrow.
