Labour Weekend Ford Mustang Convention
Up to 150 Mustangs will be part of the 37th National Mustang Convention, to be held at the Viaduct Events Centre at the Viaduct Basin.
Ford NZ says that after the United States, New Zealand has more Mustang owners per capital than anywhere else in the world.
"It is a particular source of pride for Ford New Zealand that the Mustang has earned such a revered place in the hearts of Kiwis,” says Simon Rutherford, Managing Director of Ford New Zealand.
“The activities of independent organisations are invaluable to us, and we’re happy to support the Auckland Mustang Owners Club to present the National Mustang Convention this year.”
Ian Waters, President of the Auckland Mustang Owners Club, says: “Ford New Zealand has always been very supportive of us as Mustang enthusiasts, and we’re looking forward to a great convention this year. It’s always a special thrill to see so many of these exceptional cars together in one place.”
Mustang in popular culture
On the day Mustang was launched in 1964, enthusiasts bought 22,000 vehicles, and the Mustang took less than two years to rack up a million sales.
More songs have been written about the Mustang than any other car. The vehicles have been featured prominently in more than 500 movies – most famously in the Steve McQueen film Bullitt, but also in classic films such as Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever, Gone in 60 Seconds, and more recently I Am Legend, Transformers, Getaway and Need for Speed.
The Mustangs will be on show over three levels of the Viaduct Events Centre on Saturday October 22 from 10am to 4pm, along with trade stands.
The Mustangs will assemble again at 10am on Sunday October 23, in front of The Spencer On Byron hotel in Takapuna. From there, they will ride in convoy via Kumeu to the AMP Showgrounds at Helensville, arriving at around 11.45am. Here, the Mustangs will be on display until around 2pm as part of Helensville’s “Art in the Village”.
As with earlier models, these new Ford Mustangs have struck a particular chord with Kiwis. Ford New Zealand has already received more than 1,000 orders for new Mustangs.
The first right-hand drive Mustangs factory-built in the USA arrived in New Zealand in November 2015, and sold faster than they could be supplied. Mustangs have sold out for the rest of 2016, and delivery for new orders is not expected until March 2017.
