Ford Performance are ramping up the Mustang's racing responsibilities big time in 2018, and not just on race circuits.
Ford will soon have a Mustang competing in Supercars and NASCAR, and now they've announced a new model dedicated to dominating the drag strip, too.
Ford Performance has released the first teaser image and details of a new Cobra Jet Mustang touted as 'the quickest straight-line stallion yet'.
Fifty years after the first Mach 1 Cobra Jet appeared, Ford Performance say the 2018 model will be capable of completing a quarter-mile pass in the mid-8-second range at 240km/h.
Power will be supplied by a supercharged 5.2-liter Coyote V8, but Ford aren't disclosing any output figures at this stage.

The purpose-built drag racer will be designed to comply with National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) drag racing and several National Mustang Racers Association and National Muscle Car Association classes in the U.S.
As such, the Cobra Jet will utilise a unique four-link rear suspension, drag race-specific coil-over suspension, a Ford 9-inch solid rear axle from Strange Engineering, NHRA-certified roll cage, Racetech FIA seats, and specially designed Weld Racing wheels.
“From the very first Mustang Cobra Jets dominating the 1968 NHRA Winternationals to our modern-day Cobra Jet racers, the Ford Performance Parts team continues to build the Cobra Jet brand based on its success at the track over five decades,” said Ford Performance Partsglobal director Eric Cin. .
“That, in turn, has inspired generations of Mustang fans to create their own performance machines for the street.”
Engineered by Ford Performance Parts and built on on the 2018 Ford Mustang platform, production of the Cobra Jet will be limited to 68 non-VIN units.
All 68 units will be offered in either Race Red or Oxford White and feature a commemorative 50th anniversary graphics package and anniversary badging if desired.
Final 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet ordering and product specifications will be announced in Q3, 2018.
