Wayne Rooney turns up for pre-season training in a BMW i8
The European football season may feel like it is only just over but Wayne Rooney's thoughts were already on the next Premier League campaign as he arrived for the first day of pre-season training yesterday.
Star striker Rooney, 29, rolled into Manchester United's Carrington training ground in his environmentally-friendly BMW i8 sports car.
The plug-in hybrid car, which costs £105,000, can get from 0-62mph in just 4.4 seconds and has a top speed of 155mph.
But unlike other super cars it uses the combination of an electric motor and a small but powerful petrol engine - the same size as one used in a Mini - which provide extremely low emissions into the environment.
It is also capable of achieving as much as 134.5mpg, according to tests, making it one of the most economical cars to run on the market.
And with CO2 emissions of just 49g/km, road tax on the car is free, while the model also qualifies for the British Government’s plug-in car subsidy of up to £5,000.

Perhaps the striker purchased the new car, which he debuted in March, to help offset his family's carbon footprint with wife Coleen, 29, famous for her numerous family holidays.
The WAG enjoyed nine trips abroad between September 2013 and 2014, and just days ago the whole family were seen soaking up the sun on a trip to Barbados, where they have a £5million villa.
Manchester United's latest signing, £25 million Dutch winger Memphis Depay, was also spotted driving into Carrington this morning, no doubt eager to start work with his new teammates, driving an Audi.
Dutch midfielder Daley Blind arrived at the Carrington training ground in his similar Audi RS7 Quattro, like the one pictured below.
And there were returns for goalkeeper David de Gea - rumoured to be the subject of a move to Real Madrid, and Robin van Persie, who has been strongly linked with a move to Fenerbache in Turkey. They were driving Range Rovers Sports, like the one below, to work.
Down the M62, the Liverpool players were also showing off their plush motors when they reported for pre-season duty at the club's Melwood training ground.
Raheem Sterling turned up in his Mercedes despite growing speculation linking him with a move away from Liverpool, including a failed £40million bid from Manchester City.
And new signing Nathaniel Clyne arrived in a plush white Bentley,like the one above, fresh from his £12.5million move from Southampton.
