OK, this is now two new Audi models in a row where images have leaked early.
Any-who, here it is; the new 2019 Audi A1, depicted in its 35 TFSI (gunmetal) and 40 TFSI (yellow) — each with a supporting S Line package — ahead of its official release. The leak comes courtesy of Belgian motoring website Autotijd.
It's important to note the spec of these cars because that helps explain the aggressive bumper and fascia treatments pictured. Both models come with a set of huge, gaping front vents on the flanks of the front bumper. Of greater note are the trio of vents above the primary grill — potentially a nod to Audi's rallying history and the late-model Quattro that sported a similar set-up.
That style envelops the rest of the car; from side-sills that jut out in contrasting colours to a complex rear diffuser arrangement with dual exhaust pipes. Big guard-filling wheels also punctuate the two pictured variants.
Obviously, expect most of this sporting tinsel to disappear on 'standard' models.
In terms of mechanical spec, the A1 will share the same compact-configuration Volkswagen Group MQB platform (the A0 variant, for the chassis nerds) as the Volkswagen Polo, Seat Ibiza, and more. And you can see some of that shared DNA illustrated in this new A1's side profile; particularly through an arrangement of creases and curves that looks very similar to the Ibiza.
Engines are naturally still to be confirmed, but it's expected that the A1 will come with a similar assortment of motors as its Polo cousin. The 70kW 1.0-litre TSI three-popper unit is a likely inclusion in base models, while reports suggest a turbocharged 2.0-litre mated to Quattro all-wheel drive will feature in the range-topping S1.
Fascia and badging aside, an area where the A1 looks set to separate itself from its VW Group supermini siblings inside.
Leaked images underline a more premium space, with coloured and faux carbon-fibre accents spicing up the cabin.
The A1 trades its spherical air-conditioning vents from the current model for an elongated unit that covers the whole passenger side — bridging the gap between the 'entry-level' platform and the rest of the Audi range. Controls for the air conditioning, and everything else in the centre stack including the haptic MMI Touch infotainment screen are tilted towards the driver.
But it's that screen behind the steering wheel that's going to get Audi faithful excited. These leaked images appear to confirm that the company's lauded 'Digital Cockpit' is now going to be available (at least as an option) in its smallest car.
These leaked pictures are expected to be formalised in the coming days by a release, with some claiming that the A1 will make its world premiere at the Paris Auto Show in October.
