After a series of leaked images appeared online, Suzuki Japan has released the first official images of the soon to be released fourth generation Jimny.

The all-new Jimny SUV will continue the legacy of a small, lightweight 4WD off-roader that was first seen in 1970.

The new Jimny's exterior features a boxy retro styled design and a choice of eight two-tone colours, while the interior has been confirmed as 'straightforward' with 'down-to-earth-beauty.'

The rugged styling is said to reflect feedback from owners and fans who wanted the new Jimny to show off its 4x4 heritage and take influence from earlier models.

Suzuki has not released any specific details about the new model, apart from confirmation of a ladder frame chassis construction, 3-link ridged suspension setup and a part time 4WD system with low range transfer case.

It's expected that two Jimny models with two different engines will be produced at Suzuki's Kosai plant in Japan. A basic version powered by a turbocharged 660cc three-cylinder and a newly developed 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder.

The last new Jimny model hit showrooms in 1997, and as of March 2018 over 2.85 million Jimnys have sold worldwide.

As yet, no details are available for the New Zealand market.

The new Jimny is expected to be revealed in full next moth.
