All Ferraris sold from 2019 will have some hybrid elements, according to the Italian marque's CEO Sergio Marchionne.
This could open the way to increase the number of vehicles Ferrari manufactures, he told Automotive News.
Marchionne said there would be a "fundamental shift" in the way Ferrari manufactured its sports cars. Ferrari would ship about 8000 cars this year, and gradually raise this to 9000 by 2019.
It currently limited numbers to protect the brand's exclusivity but also because of regulations that exempt it from fuel economy and emissions requirements, provided it sells fewer than 10,000 vehicles a year.
Beyond hybrids the changes would include a combination of combustion and electrification that would yield additional performance. Marchionne said the company would expand the range to vehicles that appealed to a larger demographic by focusing on characteristics other than the technological prowess typical of its recent V8 and V12 models. An example of this was the GTC4Lusso T, a four-seater with a smaller V8 turbo engine which was designed to be driven every day.
Automotive News quoted an analyst as saying it appeared Ferrari was considering adding up to two new models to its range over the next four to five years, and with a focus on hybrid vehicles, this could allow Ferrari to produce more than 10,000 vehicles a year.
