Rhys Millen and Global Rallycross Hyundai announced for Leadfoot

The 2016 Leadfoot Festival is shaping up to be a corker, with yet another big announcement unveiled today — organizers confirming that Rhys Millen, son of Rod, will be taking on his dad at next year’s event.

“With over 20 years racing experience, Rhys has carved out a solid career and reputation becoming one of the most sought after performance drivers in the gigantic US automotive scene,” says Rod.

Over those 20 years, Rhys has become a force to be reckoned with across several motorsport disciplines, including Formula Drift — America’s premier drifting championship — and Red Bull Global Rallycross. He has even carved out a career in stunt driving for films, with his antics visible in movies like The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

Rhys will be accompanied by his four-wheel drive Global Rallycross Hyundai Veloster Turbo. A normal Veloster it isn’t, with 585hp, 610ft of torque, and a 45mm turbo restrictor among its comprehensive list of modifications.

The Veloster, a star in its own right, is just the latest in a long list of quick cars confirmed for the meeting. These include a 550hp Group B Audi Quattro S1 from Finland, ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett and his ‘MADBUL’ Mazda RX-7, and a 1906 Darracq Grand Prix peddled by current IndyCar champion Scott Dixon.

Staged on the mile-long driveway to Rod and Shelly Millen’s own 150 acre Leadfoot Ranch in Hahei on the Coromandel Peninsula, the event will take place on Waitangi Weekend on the 6–7 February.
