Alfa Romeo is developing a new Gulia coupe that will be the company's fastest road car ever thanks to a Formula 1-derived hybrid system, according to reports from Europe.
Sources close to Autocar UK have leaked the first details of the new coupe, rumoured to feature an energy recovery system similar to that used by Formula 1 cars. Furthermore, the new hybrid system is said to be a development version of that used in LaFerrari, which Ferrari say is more advanced than the type used in its Formula 1 cars.
The two engines used in the Giulia Veloce and Guilia Quadrifoglio are likely to be carried over in the new hybridised coupe, with estimates that the system would bump performance of the 2.9-litre turbocharged V6 Quadrifoglio from 377kW to 478kW. The 2.0-litre turbocharged engine found in the Veloce would increase from 205kW to 257kW.
It's unknown if the coupe will be built on the same platform as the Veloce and Quadrifoglio, but the new model will no doubt feature a new appearance with sloped roofline, longer doors and potentially a new rear end.
Thankfully we shouldn't have to wait too long to see the coupe for the first time, with sources announcing that a 2018 reveal is likely before production models going on sale in 2019.
The report also suggests the new coupe will carry the ‘Sprint’ or ‘GTV’ nameplate.
