Evans elects to fight for GP2 championship in 2016
After speculation about the future direction of his motorsport career, it has been confirmed that Mitch Evans has signed a deal to compete once again in the GP2 series — this time with Campos Racing alongside 19-year-old Indonesian driver Sean Geleal.
Pundits had forecast that the Kiwi driver would be searching for a seat in an endurance series, to position himself for an ultimate spot at Porsche’s WEC squad — having tested their LMP1 machine in November.
The German marque, and their Audi cousins, both recently announced that they would be downsizing their Le Mans campaigns from three cars to two for 2016.
The Spanish Campos Racing team enjoyed a competitive 2015 season, with their drivers Rio Haryanto and Arthur Pic landing numerous podium finishes — Haryanto taking three race wins over the course of the season, finishing one place ahead of Evans in the eventual series standings.
After winning the GP3 crown in 2012, Evans has had a mixed trio of seasons in the GP2 series — driving for the MW Arden and Russian Time teams respectively. But a rapid final five rounds of 2015, in which he was on the podium more than any other driver apart from series winner Stoffel Vandoorne places the New Zealander in good stead for his 2016 assault.
