Mercedes boss test-drives new electric GLC SUV.

  • The electric Mercedes GLC 400 4Matic features 800V charging architecture enabling 260km of range in 10 minutes.
  • Airmatic air suspension with rear-axle steering offers enhanced ride comfort and agility across varied road conditions.
  • Cargo space includes a 570L boot, 1740L with seats folded, plus a 128L front trunk.

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius has personally put the upcoming electric GLC through its paces ahead of its world premiere at the IAA Mobility show this September.

In a teaser video filmed at the company’s Technology Centre in Sindelfingen, Kallenius tackles five distinct driving challenges while sharing fresh details about the all-electric version of Mercedes’ best-selling model.

“We’re not just introducing a new model - we’re electrifying our top seller,” said Kallenius. “It will feature a bold new design language, cutting-edge technology, our MB.OS operating system and performance that sparks excitement.”

Based on what we’ve seen so far, he’s not exaggerating.

S-Class comfort, SUV capability

The electric GLC - starting with the GLC 400 4MATIC - will arrive with impressive specs: over 320kW DC charging capability, around 260km of range recovered in just ten minutes and a braked towing capacity of up to 2.4 tonnes. It’s also equipped for EV-friendly load-carrying, with a 128L front trunk and a rear boot expandable to 1740L with the seats down.

The ride quality promises a major step up, borrowing Airmatic suspension tech straight from the S-Class, complete with rear-axle steering (up to 4.5°). Mercedes claims this brings limousine-like comfort and agility to its midsize SUV, on both autobahns and tight city streets.

New face, familiar ambition

Design-wise, this marks a new chapter. The electric GLC is the first to wear the new EQ-forward design language - what Kallenius calls “a new face of the brand.” Inside, the MBUX Hyperscreen returns, now backed by the MB.OS software platform for a sleeker, more intuitive digital experience.

There’s also a tangible size upgrade. Compared to the combustion GLC, the electric version stretches the wheelbase by 8cm, opening up more space for passengers front and rear. Expect more legroom, more headroom and a cabin that feels decidedly more premium.

As Mercedes rolls out what it calls “the biggest product-launch programme in our company’s history,” the electric GLC might just be its most important gambit yet - a family SUV with luxury comfort, clever tech, and genuine everyday usability.

Whether it drives like a true Mercedes remains to be seen, but with the boss himself behind the wheel, expectations are already high.
