In the market for a new car? Forget the Corollas and the Rangers that dominate New Zealand's marketplace. You know it, I know it — what you really want is an ex-Government vehicle Mercedes-Benz W140 Pullman S500L.
Eight of the stretched luxury cars recently came up for sale in China, though sadly they've all been successfully sold. In a past life, the eight cars shipped foreign dignitaries around Shanghai while they visited.
Launched in 1995, the W140 Pullman is 2.7 tonnes of excess (4.4 tonnes if it's armored). Automatic closing doors and boot were advanced tech for the mid-90s, while the 5.0-litre V8 that these Chinese editions are fitted with is good for 335hp.
The regular limousine perks are also present, including electronic glass partition in case your driver won't shut up, leather everywhere, and twin flag poles on the front of each car.
These aren't just your average garden variety Pullmans though. Each has been modified to include creature comforts like televisions and fridges. Sooo fancyyy.
Decommissioned in 2014, the Chinese Goverment has been slowly drip-feeding the Pullman's onto the market via one of their own websites. The final eight cars have sold, for values between NZD$104,000 and NZ$130,000.
That's a lot of money, but it's also a hell of a lot of car ...
