Familiar ingredients, but a new name for the ZS in NZ: Vibe.

  • Turbo engine moves down to entry-level MG ZS model.
  • New Vibe boasts 54% more power than Excite, for the same price.
  • Intent was to 'end the compromise' with cheapest ZS, says MG NZ.

MG New Zealand has brought the ZS 1.5-litre turbo engine down into an entry-level model, the $27,990 Vibe. Formerly only available in the $32,990 Essence, the engine makes 125kW/275Nm - a useful 54% increase in power over the naturally aspirated Excite, which also lists for $27,990.

Vibe means entry-level ZS now offers 54% more power.

Given the price parity, presumably the Vibe will ultimately replace the entry-level Excite (although MG NZ hasn't said as much). While the latter is still listed for sale on the brand's website, it no longer appears on the official ZS specification sheet.

“Our philosophy with the MG ZS Vibe turbo variant was simple: end the compromise,” says MG Motor NZ country business manager Dean Sheed.

“The new MG ZS Vibe turbo raises the bar in terms of bang for your buck and fun factor in the compact SUV segment in NZ. Offering our potent 1.5 turbo in our most affordable Vibe turbo variant gives the best power and performance for the price.”

The Vibe has a similar specification to the Excite, but with a one-size-up upgrade to 17-inch wheels.

The new model features Halogen Headlights with LED Daytime Running Lights and it sits on distinctive and attractive 17-inch alloy wheels.

Highlights include a 3.5-inch instrument cluster and 10.25in infotainment screen with phone projection, pushbutton start and reversing camera.
