New year, new metal: Detroit Motor Show
Detroit has been through some hard times, and it must be discouraging for them to hear that a lot of manufacturers will not be attending their North American International Auto Show in January.
However, there will be more than enough new metal on show to tempt the showgoers, and here is just a taster of what they will see.
We've selected nine cars worth getting excited about, from luxurious Volvo saloons to turbocharged Porsche 911 sports cars.
BMW M2
The most miniscule of the M cars has a far from miniscule 3.0-litre turbocharged straight six under the bonnet, producing 365bhp.
It will give battle with Audi’s RS3 and the Mercedes-AMG A45 when it arrives in the UK in April.
Fisker ‘The Force 1’
We’re expecting the force to be strong in this one.
Henrik Fisker says his limited-run new vehicle, which we’ve only seen sketches of so far, will have the most powerful naturally aspirated engines on the planet.
Infiniti Q60
The production car, due to the UK later in 2016, will be based on the concept car unveiled at this very show last year.
Prototype test cars (like the one pictured above) have been spotted, but heavy camouflage has hidden the styling from prying eyes.
Lexus LF-LC
They’re saying this handsome beast is ready to go now, with cars reaching the showrooms in mid-2016, at which point they should be a threat to cars like the new Porsche 911 Turbo.
Mercedes-AMG S65 Cabriolet
The Mercedes S65 soft-top won't be cheap - but it is stunningly good looking.
A luxurious convertible with oodles of power and torque – 621bhp and 737lb ft respectively – will command a price tag of around £200,000.
We’ll see this 5.5-litre V12 beast during the course of 2016.
Mercedes-Benz SLC
After two decades of the SLK name, Mercedes is renaming its smallest convertible sports car. Say hello to the 2016 SLC.
This was the SLK before its latest revamp.
To go with the new looks and new name is a new range of engines, giving between 154bhp and 242bhp.
There will also be a range-topping Mercedes-AMG SLC43.
Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S
Turbo takeover: The entry-level Porche 911 will use turbo power from 2016. The car debuts in Detroit.
So Detroit will unveil a car already on sale in the UK.
Just about everything has been upgraded but all of the attention will focus on the new twin-turbo 3.8-litre flat-six giving up to 572bhp.
Volvo S90
Watch out Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes — Volvo is coming for you. The new S90 is a luxury saloon car looking to dethrone the likes of the A6, 5 Series, XF and E-class.
The big saloon is moving upmarket to try to muscle in on the Jaguar XF and BMW 5 Series territory.
Despite its size, it will have a plug-in hybrid engine option that will produce just 44g/km of CO2.
It should arrive later this year.
