In a digital age where in-car technologies such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are rapidly gaining traction, the humble AM/FM radio continues to hold a significant place in the hearts of drivers. Despite the plethora of entertainment options available, new data illustrates that a substantial number of individuals still prefer the classic radio experience while on the road.

Surprising persistence of AM/FM radio

We often find ourselves using the latest in-car tech, yet recent data reveals a surprising trend: a considerable number of people predominantly spend their drive time tuning into AM/FM radio. It’s 2023, and while many might assume that traditional radio is fading into oblivion, the reality appears to be quite the contrary.

Edison Research sheds light

The insight comes courtesy of Edison Research in the U.S., which surveyed individuals aged 13 and above to understand their audio consumption behaviour while driving. The findings were segmented into two distinct categories: those who have access to Android Auto or CarPlay and those who do not.

A breakdown of listening habits

For those devoid of the latest in-car tech - CarPlay or Android Auto - the data showcases a notable leaning towards AM/FM radio:

  • 67% of time spent listening to AM/FM radio
  • 9% of time spent on streaming services like Apple Music
  • 12% of time spent on SiriusXM
  • 4% of time spent on podcasts
  • 8% of time spent on “other” audio options

On the flip side, individuals with either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto exhibited a slightly diversified audio consumption pattern:

  • 46% of time spent listening to AM/FM radio
  • 18% of time spent on streaming services like Apple Music
  • 19% of time spent on SiriusXM
  • 7% of time spent on podcasts
  • 10% of time spent on “other” audio options

Interestingly, the data unveils that individuals equipped with CarPlay or Android Auto are about twice as likely to utilise streaming services in comparison to those without.

However, the enduring appeal of AM/FM radio is evident as it continues to capture a significant share of listening time, irrespective of the availability of modern in-car tech. The findings evoke a sense of nostalgia and underline the enduring simplicity and appeal of radio as a companion for the road, despite recent tech aiming to redefine the automotive infotainment landscape.
