BMW has teamed up with streetwear brand Kith for a bold new project, unveiling a Techno Violet-themed M1 art car and a limited-edition XM SUV.
This partnership continues American clothing designer Ronnie Fieg’s love affair with BMW, marking another collaboration between the fashion house and the German marque.
A classic hue on a legendary M1
Techno Violet, a colour first introduced on the BMW E36 M3, has found its way to the legendary M1 supercar.
The 1981 BMW M1, renowned for its wedge-shaped design and motorsport pedigree, has been fully restored using original parts. The restoration retains the car’s 3.5-litre inline six-cylinder engine, which delivers 205kW and a top speed of 26 km/h - impressive even by modern standards.
While most BMW M1s feature bright hues like orange, this is the first time Techno Violet has adorned the M1.
Kith has paired the exterior with a refreshed interior, featuring modern BMW Individual Black Merino Leather. Seats and panels are finished with Kith’s monograph pattern, bringing a contemporary touch to a classic design.
The vehicle will take centre stage at Art Basel Miami in Kith’s BMW showcase, alongside Fieg’s personal collection.
Kith XM: a modern interpretation
While the M1 represents BMW’s motorsport legacy, the XM is a symbol of its evolving identity.
The Kith XM, painted in a matte version of Techno Violet, features a 4.4-litre V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain producing 550kW. Kith branding permeates the interior, from embossed seat fabrics to custom throw pillows.
Exclusive design touches include purple illuminated grilles and trim, although their presence in production models remains uncertain.
With production capped at 47 units globally, each Kith XM will feature a unique badge celebrating BMW M’s 47-year history. The Kith XM will be available for pre-order from December 6, with each unit carrying a premium price tag.
BMW’s choice to revisit Techno Violet not only revives a fan-favourite colour but also sparks conversation about its shifting design ethos. Whether it’s the timeless appeal of the M1 or the divisive styling of the XM, this collaboration with Kith ensures BMW remains in the spotlight.
