Second Rotary fundraising Bangers car rally
Up to 20 entries are being invited for the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay’s second fundraising car rally, which starts at the end of March.
The 2016 “Bangers to Bluff” rally will start in Auckland on March 30 and end 11 days later in Bluff, on April 9.
Each car entered in the rally must cost less than $1000, and in the style of television’s Top Gear, points will be awarded for entries costing less than $1000.
One of the organisers, Stewart Maclaren, said the idea for the rally arose when members were discussing ways of raising funds.
“We were all Top Gear fans and thought of the idea of a rally with a series of challenges,” he said.
Among the beneficiaries of this year’s event will be Alzheimers New Zealand and the Hopeworks Foundation.
Points will be awarded to rally competitors who manage to enter cars bought for less than the maximum $1000, for the country of manufacture(European models will score more points for longevity than Japanese models), and there will be points awarded for different “challenges” during the rally.
Maclaren said registration for the rally would cost $500, and participants would be required to find sponsorship of $500.
The rally will take a scenic, “less-travelled” route rather than the main highway south to Bluff.
The challenge will be to drive a four-door car, registered and with a WoF, and costing less than $1000, from Auckland via The Catlins and Bluff, to finish in Invercargill. Contestants will then travel to Queenstown to dispose of the vehicles, funds from which will go to charity.
Maclaren said the rally would be similar to an Australian rally from Canberra to Townsville, where the value of cars was limited to $500, and the Rust to Rome rally where the value of cars was limited to $1200.
