Really, it was just a matter of time.
Audi are reportedly weighing up getting back into the electric supercar race in the near future, according to a recent Autocar interview with the manufacturer's chief of research and development, Peter Mertens.
“The question is ‘would I like to make it happen soon?’ and the answer is yes, of course,” he said.
“For a brand like Audi, a supercar is always interesting and it’s a segment in which we have been playing. We have been a very serious player.
“800V puts a significant extra cost on the bill. We need to evaluate whether customers will be prepared to pay that … In segments like super-sports cars, the answer will be yes, no doubt about it.”
That 800V reference is an interesting one. It just so happens to be the same value contained in the fast-charging system of the upcoming Porsche Mission-E. The nod has spawned talk that, should Audi produce the supercar, it's likely to share DNA with the Mission-E (which itself is slated for a 2020 release, as the first fully electric Porsche ever made).
This isn't exactly surprising from the four-ring brand. They've made an electric supercar — the R8 e-tron — already. Although that was culled last year. It's also not surprising considering their expanded focus on EVs, as they look to put 'Dieselgate' behind them.
