Many lower limits introduced after January 2020 are now being changed back.

The promised reversal of many Auckland speed-limit changes enacted by the previous Government gets under way this month.

Variable limits will apply within 300 metres of school gates.

"New Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limit 2024" legislation that came into effect on 30 October last year requires Auckland Transport to reverse two specific categories of roads to the limits that were in effect prior to 1 January 2020.

These include 30km/h limits introduced on school roads and lower limits on "urban connectors", unless they relate to specific changes in land use.

You can find every Auckland route affected by the reversals on an official AT document here, which separates them into local and urban-connectors, region-by-region. So it's easy to find roads in your area.

When school-street limits have been reversed, some 30km/h postings will be replaced by new variable-limit signs that will display 30km/h during school times and "operate at the start and end of the school day". Other locations will have static signs that simply specify the different times the 30km/h limit applies.

The variable limits will apply within 300 metres of school gates.

When are the Auckland speed limits being changed?

Stage 1 has begun this month (March), with the reversal of limits of urban connector roads. This phase should be completed by the end of the month; AT also says it will "start removing" road markings on some red road surfaces during this period.

Stage 2 is the school-road reversal and will happen between May and June, with expected completion by 1 July.

When will the new speed limits apply?

The new limits are active as soon as revised signs are errected on each respective road. These will be be on various dates, so be-extra attentive to the posted limits during this transitional period.
