Manufacturers of an English descent tend to love to crow about it ... be it Jaguar, Range Rover, or Aston Martin.
Which makes it all the more confusing that the latter manufacturer has just announced that their 'flagship Super GT' model will be reborn with a distinctly Italian nameplate; DBS Superleggera. Yep, that's Italian for 'super light', and a badge that's appeared on many Lamborghini models.
The DBS Superleggera name will be attached to the car that's going to replace the long-serving Aston Martin Vanquish. The company have teased the car's looks below, with the rest of it to be revealed in 2018's second quarter.
Other details are thin on the ground, apart from the fact that the DBS Superleggera comes in the middle of Aston Martin's self-reinvention; following on from the DB11 and Vantage (which Driven got to hoon around the apexes of Portimao a few weeks ago).
You'd also presume that the name is indicative of a top-tier new model that's sharper, faster, and angrier than the one it replaces.
But, don't think that this is some kind of odd example of automotive cultural appropriation. 'Superleggera' is actually an old Aston Martin nameplate from the company's past.
It first appeared on the Aston Martin DB4s, DB5s, and DB6s through the '50s and '60s, as a mark of storied coach-builders Carrozzeria Touring and their dedication for trimming weight and adding performance to their work.
“When you hear the name DBS Superleggera, you know what it is," said Aston Martin Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman.
"It’s the definitive Aston Martin Super GT. It’s an icon, a statement and this one will be no different. We’ve pushed the boundaries of performance and design to give this car a distinct character and ensure it’s worthy of the heritage and weight that this name carries”
There is some sadness here, given that it's also the end of an era for the 'Vanquish' nameplate. At least for now, anyway.
This was the car that helped Aston Martin return to critical form; spawning brilliant machines like the DB9 and Vantage of the mid-noughties. Let's see if the DBS Superleggera can follow these footsteps.
