It is true that The Good Oil harbours a dislike of caravans (hatred is probably a better word) we have often admitted to having a soft-spot for the ultra-cool retro caravans (or Travel Trailers as Airstream likes to call them).
That may be because Airstream is a very American take on a caravan and completely over-the-top. Anyway, Airstreams have become even cooler.
Land Rover teamed with the American manufacturer to use a Range Rover Sport Hybrid to tow an Airstream more than 4000km from Whitley in Britain to Land Rover’s cold weather test centre in Arjeplog, Sweden, and to the Arctic Circle. They did it to show how capable the Range Rover Sport Hybrid was, but even surprised themselves, as the weather was worse than expected because the trip coincided with the tail end of Hurricane Ole that battered Scandinavia. Gales, record snow depths, -22C and icy roads tested crew, car and the 8.25m, 2.5 tonne trailer to the extreme.
Ben Samuelson, who led the team, said: “We were closely watching the long-range weather forecasts before we set off but nothing prepared us for how bad it got. However, it was only as we got out of the car that we realised how treacherous it was outside.”
