The iconic Ferrari 250 GT Coupe owned by Angelina Jolie is set to be auctioned, adding celebrity allure to an already rare and prestigious vehicle.
While it's not the revered 250 GTO, with just 353 units ever made, this particular Ferrari stands out due to its iconic design and renowned previous owner.
When the Ferrari 250 GT Coupe Pinin Farina debuted, it marked a turning point for the Italian carmaker. It was the first Ferrari to be produced in semi-series production, thanks to a new Pininfarina factory purpose-built for this vehicle.
This step allowed Ferrari to transition from building cars entirely by hand to a more scalable production model. However, only 353 units were made over three years, underscoring the car’s exclusivity.
Despite Ferrari building more examples of this model than previous vehicles, the 250 GT Coupe maintained its status as a performance powerhouse.
The 3.0-litre Colombo V12 engine, after which the 250 is named, generated a healthy 176kW, allowing the car to exceed 225km/h. These specifications made it a serious contender in the high-performance car market of its time.
Visually, the 250 GT Coupe is a triumph of Pininfarina's design prowess.
The clean, elegant lines, combined with its long hood and signature wire wheels, make it arguably one of the most attractive Ferraris ever created.
The sports car retains its luxurious feel with a deep red leather interior paired with dark black paint - a combination that embodies the 1950s Grand Tourer spirit. The wood steering wheel and the manual four-speed gearbox further add to its charm.
Angelina Jolie, known for her diverse range of film roles, has now added a new dimension to her public persona as a Ferrari enthusiast.
The upcoming auction of her 250 GT Coupé is set to attract considerable attention due to her ownership. Christie's has placed an estimate of between US$660,000 and US$880,000 (around NZ$1 million and NZ$1.4 million) on the car, largely driven by its Hollywood provenance.
While the Ferrari already holds immense value as a collector’s item, celebrity ownership has been known to inflate prices.
As Christie's highlights, the car has been driven for around 103,000km. Although not low mileage by any means, this suggests the car has been enjoyed over the years rather than simply being stored as a museum piece.
It’s not every day that such a unique combination of heritage and celebrity ownership comes up for auction. While there are numerous classic Ferraris with prestigious owners in their histories, few can boast a name as globally recognised as Angelina Jolie.
For Ferrari enthusiasts and collectors, this 250 GT Coupe presents an opportunity to own both a piece of automotive and Hollywood history.
Whether it sells fast remains to be seen, but this Ferrari is undoubtedly one to watch in the upcoming auction.
