With production of the Beetle coming to an end in 2019, we asked four Beetle owners to tell us what they love most about their iconic cars.
I’ve had exactly 20 Beetles in total since the 80s. Dad used to race Beetles, and my uncle and cousin still race their cars in Germany. There’s just something about seeing an uncommonly shaped Beetle among a sea of boring modern cars, it’s impossible to miss it.
I wanted my kids to have memories of driving in a Beetle, so I took my daughter for a test drive in one. She said “Dad, you have to take it!” She absolutely loved it.
From there we’ve driven it all over the country together. Hills were a little challenging for the 1500cc engine and crosswinds made the drive even more exciting! Strangely, the heater only worked during summers but never in winter…
It's now parked in the garage and the kids sometimes sit in it playing with the radio. My eldest daughter drove it across the paddock practising her skills with the clutch when she was 11, she was a natural.
