Alfa Romeo is the up-and-coming carmaker of 2016.

After releasing the new Giulia saloon earlier this year, the Italian brand has followed up with a new SUV to boost its rapidly expanding range.

Called the Stelvio, it's named after the mountain pass in the Italian Alps and is set to go head-to-head with Jaguar's F-Pace, Porsche's Macan and Range Rover's Evoque when it goes on sale in Britain next year.

This version, unveiled at the Los Angeles motor show, is the flagship offering. It has a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine producing a rip-roaring 503bhp.

Alfa's drive to stamp a footprint back on to the automotive sector began last year with the release of the 4C sports car followed by the Giulia this year -- a car motoring experts have welcomed with plenty of fanfare.

For some years before these arrivals, the Alfa Romeo line-up had consisted of just two models -- the MiTo supermini and Giulietta hatchback -- that have been long-overdue replacement.

But a revitalised approach has seen the brand commit to launching eight new cars before the end of the decade, meaning there are five more to come following the release of the Stelvio.

With the SUV market growing faster than any other on four wheels, it was inevitable that one of the new variants would be a 4X4, though this hot version may be a surprise to many.
