- Airstream has revealed a limited-run caravan styled after Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West.
- Its rear sleeping area converts to a king bed facing an open hatch for scenic views.
- Only 200 units will be made, each priced from around NZ$304,000.
What happens when two icons of American design - one on wheels, the other in stone - collide?
You get the Airstream Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian Limited Edition Travel Trailer, a highly exclusive tribute to timeless design thinking and luxurious open-air camping.
No tent? No problem.
This isn’t your average camp caravan. Based on Wright’s 1930s Taliesin West studio in Scottsdale, Arizona, the 28-foot Usonian trailer features sharp lines, smart space utilisation and a signature silver sheen.
Inside, two bench seats convert into a full-width king bed that backs right up to a rear hatch. Open it wide, and voilà - your bedroom is now a sunset viewing platform. Or an Instagram post waiting to happen.
Need more flexibility? That same bed reconfigures into twin bunks if you’re not sharing.
Up front, a dining table and dedicated desk fold away neatly, making space for a pull-out sofa that doubles as a second sleeping zone.
Frank Lloyd Wright meets #vanlife
The Usonian isn’t just borrowing a name. It leans heavily on Wright’s architectural ethos (living in harmony with nature) by letting the outside in. The cabin has more windows than your typical Airstream, including a pair of portholes that nod to Wright’s fascination with circular shapes. The result is an airier, brighter interior that still manages to feel sleek and self-contained.
Wright’s influence is more than cosmetic. It’s conceptual. This caravan encourages slow travel and thoughtful design - two things both Wally Byam (Airstream’s founder) and Wright championed back in the day. And unlike Airstream’s 2021 collab with Pottery Barn, this one feels properly architectural.
Great design still costs money
Only 200 Usonian caravans will be built, and each comes with a hefty price tag of US$184,900 (around NZ$304,000). That’s a steep ask for a slice of mobile serenity, but you are getting a design pedigree on wheels.
Airstream has not disclosed local availability or shipping options just yet. But for those with deep pockets and a deeper appreciation for design history, the Usonian might be the most stylish way to camp with your hatch open.
