Wow. Wow, wow, wow.
Remember the Tesla Roadster? The company's ambitious first car, largely now forgotten in the shadow of the Model S sedan that followed it.
Well, Tesla have announced plans to produce an EV successor to it by 2020. They've showcased the concept car, and they've also announced some numbers. And oh boy, the numbers...
Let's just get this out of the way now. Tesla have said that the Roadster will accelerate from 0–100km/h in about two seconds (0–60mp/h in 1.9 seconds), will hit a top speed of 250mp/h (402km/h), and perhaps weirdly most impressively will have a range of 620 miles (997 kilometres) on a single charge.
At the launch Elon Musk said that "these numbers sound unreal", before adding "but they're not."
The top speed isn't unprecedented, but in the world of road cars that acceleration time is mind blowing. All-wheel drive and 10,000Nm of torque (!!) play their part in this figure.
Pricing for the base Roadster is US$200,000 (NZ$295,000), with 'reservations' alone costing US$50,000. Particularly big Tesla fans can also order themselves a 'Founder Series' model, which will set them back another US$50,000.
The point many are making, in the shadow of these frankly insane-o numbers, is the question of how Tesla will manage to make these things...
The announcement came alongside a new electric Semi truck, and included a 'working' prototype that tootled around the stage.
But, the company are still wading through production issues with the Model X and upcoming Model 3, as well as the continual financial concerns. There's also the awkward question of the crossover they're intending to release in 2019.
With two more models on the roster (a hypercar and a Semi, no less), those woes could well continue.
