Lamborghini’s flagship supercar will receive a new areo kit, re-developed suspension, a lighter body, four-wheel steering and more power from its naturally aspirated V12 in 2017.
“This is the next generation Aventador as well as the expression of new technological and performance milestones in super sports car development,” says Lamborghini Chairman and CEO Stefano Domenicalli.
“The Aventador is a visionary design, cutting-edge technology and driving dynamics in pure harmony, and elevates the concept of super sports cars to a new level”
Design and Aerodynamics
The side profile of the Aventador S remains familiar, but the front and rear have received the full R&D treatment in pursuit of maximum aerodynamic efficiency, and adding to the cars already muscular appearance. A new nose and longer front splitter redirect airflow, increase cooling to the radiators and generate 130 per cent more down force over the previous model.
In the rear, the Aventador S gets a new diffuser that amplifies airflow, reduces drag and generates even more downforce. Three single exhaust outlets exit through the rear bumper.
An active rear wing is movable in three positions depending on speed and driving mode. When the wing is in optimum position the overall efficiency at high speed is improved by 50 per cent, low drag efficiency is improved by more than 400 per cent over the previous model.
Engine and Exhaust
The naturally aspirated twelve cylinder, 6.5 litre V12 engine has an output of 740 hp, 40 more than its predecessor, and a torque figure of 690 Nm at 5,500 rpm. The increased output has been achieved by re-optimizing both VVT (Variable Valve Timing) and VIS (Variable Intake System). The maximum engine revs have been increased from 8,350 to 8,500 rpm.
0-100 km/h will be taken care of in 2.9 seconds with a top speed of 350 kp/h. A 7-speed transmission will send power to the axels with gear changes taking 50 milliseconds.
Four driving modes will keep the engine in check:
STRADA – for maximum comfort in daily use
SPORT – sporty rear wheel drive feel
CORSA – maximum track performance
New EGO mode – provides several additional and individual set-up profiles, customizable by the driver.
Aventador S features a new exhaust system that is 20 per cent lighter than the original – resulting in more sound and improved throttle response from the engine.
As with the previous model, the Aventador S will be equipped with a stop-start system and cylinder deactivation for optimized efficiency.
Drivetrain and Chassis
The Aventador S retains the same carbon monocoque chassis as the Aventador and aluminum frames. Dry weight is 1,575 kg’s.
A new four-wheel steering system makes its way to the S model, the first time Lamborghini have fitted the system to a production car. The system will provide improved agility in the slower stuff, and increased stability at faster speeds. In the front axle it will pair with Lamborhini Dynamic Steering (LDS) developed for a more natural response and sharper turn-in. LDS will work with Lamborghini Rear-wheel Steering (LRS) in the rear axle – the system is brained by two separate actuators that can react to drivers steering inputs in five milliseconds.
Lamborghini have updated the Aventador's suspension system for four-wheel steering. The new geometry means there are new upper and lower arm and wheel carriers, new rear springs and a new real-time variable dampening system.
Electronic stability control has been made faster and more precise, it will also allow more torque to be sent to the rear axel, less torque is shifted to the front to allow over-steer and a sporty, but safe drive.
Aventador S will sit on its own specially developed Pirelli P Zero tires and carbon cermamic breaks will be equipped as standard, able to go from 100 km/h to standstill in 31 metres.
First customers will take delivery of the new Aventador S in the second quarter of 2017.
