Pikes Peak is where some of the craziest vehicles of all shapes and sizes come together to traverse one of the world's most dangerous racetracks. This year, at the event's 101st edition, the Ford SuperVan 4.2 could well have grabbed all the attention.
This newest monster van from Ford comes as a modified version of the nearly 1500kW SuperVan 4, which debuted last year at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
While its predecessor packed more power, the SuperVan 4.2 reportedly sheds some potency to conquer the track as fast as possible. Perhaps the most glaring evidence of that change is the addition of a massive, carbon fibre rear wing. Now carrying the new spoiler and other aerodynamic upgrades, the vehicle achieves nearly 2,000 kg of downforce at 241 km/h.
Last year's model also came equipped with four electric motors, but the SuperVan 4.2 comes with only three, with one dedicated to the front axle and the remaining two powering the rear wheels. It also gets a newly-optimised regenerative braking system.
Other race-ready fitments include forged wheels, Pirelli P Zero tyres, carbon-ceramic rotors, a plexiglass windshield, and a single OMP racing seat wrapped around a roll cage.
Another new addition is the Ford Performance livery, first seen on the Dark Horse-derived Mustang GT3 race car. It features Ford's signature blue along with orange and purple emblasonments.
The Ford SuperVan 4.2 made its debut at the 101st Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, driven by seven-time participant Romain Dumas.
