Toyota has unveiled the pricing details for the eagerly anticipated 2024 Hilux GR Sport II, setting prices in the UK at £49,750 (around NZ$104,700).

This price point positions the popular ute at a higher price point than its direct competitor, the Ford Ranger Raptor. But whether it will be worth that premium poses an entirely different question.

Don't call it basic

Despite bearing the high-performance GR badge, the Hilux GR Sport II retains the familiar (and reliable) 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine, generating a modest 150kW and 500Nm of torque—more than a base 2.0-litre Raptor with 157kW but less than the 292kW V6 model.

With a six-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive, the truck doesn't promise exhilarating speed but focuses on delivering functionality.

Toyota claims the model to be the "best-driving Hilux yet," an assertion rooted in significant improvements in its design and handling. The truck boasts a wider track and a raised ride height of 20mm, predictably enhancing stability and handling.

Notably, the midsize ute also sees a considerable upgrade in towing capacity, maxing out at 3500 kg—a figure that Toyota proudly declares best-in-class. However, the looming threat of BYD's upcoming plug-in hybrid Shark ute hangs over the GR Sport II.

Aggressive style, new features

Visually, the Hilux GR Sport II does not shy away from asserting its presence. It features an aggressive front fascia with a black mesh grille and the brand name in all-caps, though we would have preferred the lettering at the rear for a more retro-inspired look.

But we make do with a sporty bumper and a decorative silver skid plate that amplifies its rugged appeal. Other practical enhancements include larger front discs and the addition of rear discs, replacing the traditional drums. The suspension system transforms with monotube dampers for a smoother, more controlled driving experience.

The exterior modifications are rounded off with 17-inch black alloy wheels wrapped in all-terrain tyres and a range of blacked-out components from fender flares to door handles.

Comfort meets sport

Stepping inside, the Hilux GR Sport II attempts to blend luxury and sportiness. The cabin is decked out with black leather and suede sports seats, accented with silver contrast stitching and punctuated with GR logos. Red seatbelts and aluminium pedals enhance the sporty feel, creating an environment that resonates with the GR's racing spirit.

Tech-wise, the truck features standard fare, including a 9-speaker JBL premium sound system and an 8-inch infotainment system that supports wired Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay.

Premium pricing for specific tastes

Set to hit the roads later this year, the Toyota Hilux GR Sport II offers a mix of aesthetic changes, functional upgrades and a steep price tag. On that note, the new ute has yet to be confirmed for New Zealand, although the standard GR Sport remains the pinnacle of the local Hilux range.

While the GR Sport II may not rival the Ford Ranger Raptor in raw performance, it offers an alternative for those valuing Toyota's reliability and specific enhancements in handling and comfort. This model will undoubtedly appeal to loyal Toyota enthusiasts and those seeking a capable and stylish workhorse.
